Roofing Options

We can categorise roofs into various styles. The list of styles are as follows:

  • Gabled roof
  • Hip roof
  • Shed roof
  • Pitched roofs (low-pitched roof and high-pitched roof)
  • Solar roof. If you're looking for an environmentally friendly option then consider going solar!
  • Green roof.
  • Slate roof, which is a natural material that needs minimal maintenance and performs well in harsh climates.

Pitched roofs

  • The most common and recognizable roof style is the pitched. The pitch of a roof, as you can see in the picture below, refers to its slope or angle which determines how far water will travel off the edge before it drips on something else (say your garden). Pitches are also categorized by degrees with 15-degree sloping roofs being very flat while 30-degrees would be steep. A lot of factors go into determining what degree is best for each person's needs; here are some considerations.
  • A lower pitched roof has more surface area than one that slopes higher so if you want an uninterrupted view from inside your home this may not be such a good fit. Houses with narrow eaves will also have a hard time when it comes to the pitch, as the roof line is not high enough for water to run off of.
  • A higher pitched roof can make your home seem more welcoming and less imposing on its surroundings because you are able to see into the top third of your house from ground level without feeling like someone could fall down at any moment. The sloping angle makes this possible by redirecting rainwater away from windows and doors so that they don't collect moisture which causes mold or rot problems in certain climates.

Green Roof

The green roof (also known as a living roof) has many advantages including: improving air quality, reducing storm runoff, and helping to cool your home. Green roofs are also environmentally friendly because they can last for up to 25 years without any additional maintenance or energy input as opposed to asphalt shingles which must be replaced every 15-20 years, metal roofing that will rust in 50+ years, and wood shakes that require an annual application of a sealant like stain or varnish. The green roof industry is growing rapidly but there still needs to be more awareness about the benefits it has on our environment.
